Name: Smarty

Name before he was Mutified: Unknown, even to Smarty himself.

Age: Unknown, but at least 50 years old.

Weight: Big Damn Mutant.

Height: Smarty has never measured his exact height, but even among his Mutant brethren he was always unusually tall.

Birthplace: Unknown, but some vault in California.

Affiliation: Independent Super Mutant. Former member of The Unity. Currently a private Detective.

Relationship Status: Super Mutant. (Technically a Widower, but we'll say he's Single).

Personality: Smarty, despite being a Super Mutant, fancies himself a pacifist. Now, Smarty's no fool, he knows that sometimes you need to crack some skulls to survive. But Smarty always sees the value in talking a situation out, and whenever he can, he tries to make peace, not war. He's a gentle giant, never hesitating to heal someone who is injured, by they NCR, Fiend, or even Brotherhood. He always believes that people can find redemption, and make themselves better. But above all else, Smarty is driven by Truth and Justice. The pursuit of the Truth, especially about himself, is what makes him wake up every morning. And the Justice that must be done when he learns the truth is what he prepares himself for every day. As you'll learn in his Backstory, Smarty's low exposure to radiation has lead to him retaining his Intelligence, but it came at a cost. All of his memories before he was mutified have been forgotten, with only blurs appearing to him in dreams occasionally. He can also be somewhat forgetful due to the side-effects of FEV, so he makes sure to write down all relevant notes to a case.

Factions:

All Factions not mentioned are considered "Neutral" due to Smarty never interacting with them, or just having no real opinion on them. It's worth noting that Smarty does have friends in almost every Faction, even if he doesn't have an opinion of said faction.

"I always say, I like any faction who'll like me back."

Likes: NCR, Unity, Followers, DR.

This may seem like a strange collection to have in the "Likes" category, but Smarty his own reasons for each. The NCR, for all it's faults, Seem the most closely aligned with Smarty's definition of "Justice". While Smarty is not an NCR citizen, they have also helped Smarty on a few cases in the past. This also applies to DR. The Unity, while Smarty doesn't always agree with their actions, are responsible for saving his life, as you'll read about in his backstory. The COTC convinced him to keep living, after he was turned into a Mutant. Smarty also has some old friends from him time as a Unity Soldier. The Followers should be obvious. A man of intelligence and learning likes the organization of intelligence and learning. Go figure.

"The Unity is, ironically enough, divided. The top 10 percent or so who believe in the Master and his doctrine, and the other 90 percent, the poor, less intelligent mutants who just want someone to follow because they don't know what else to do. I pity them both." -Smarty, when asked about The Unity.

Dislikes: All forms of The Brotherhood, Fiends, Legion.

Smarty doesn't necessarily "Hate" the BOS, but rather he is frustrated that they insist on the death of all Mutants. Smarty likes to see the best in people, and continuously hopes that the Brotherhood can have their minds changed about Mutants. A naive dream? Maybe. But one that Smarty pursues nonetheless. It's because of Smarty seeing the best in people that he only "Dislikes" Fiends. Despite having a good friend who is a Fiend (Shoutout to Daytripper Daisy), Smarty isn't blind to the harm that they do. He views this, however, as a result of their addictions and need to survive, and, perhaps naively, hopes they can learn to be better people. When it comes to Legion, Smarty tends to avoid them more often than not, as some of their members have expressed Anti-Mutant opinions, although Smarty isn't entirely sure what their thoughts on Mutants are as a faction, he tends to stay on the safe side and avoid them.

"I don't have a problem with the Brotherhood, it's them who have a problem with me!" -Smarty, when asked about the BOS.

Hates: Paradise Falls, Enclave

Do I have to explain this?

"Oh, Fuck! Got to go!" -Smarty, upon seeing Enclave enter the town.

Past:

Smarty has spent the better part of his life trying to figure out his past. Where he comes from, who he really is, even his real name, are all the greatest mysteries Smarty has undertaken.

Smarty remembers waking up as a super mutant. Everything before that was a blur. What you're about to read is information that has never been revealed, and something that not even Smarty himself knows.
Smarty grew up in a vault. The number or experiment wasn't important. What is important is that the Vault was in California, and housed a promising individual who would eventually become Smarty. Smarty was a scholar, and training under the Vault's doctor. Eventually, he decided that he needed to see and study the wasteland for his studies, and left one morning to never be seen again.

At this point in history, the NCR had grown to taking most of southern California, but the Enclave's oil rig had not yet been destroyed. Smarty traveled the wasteland before stumbling upon the Mariposa Military Base. There, while investigating the ruins, Enclave forces found Smarty and captured him. At that time, the Enclave was experimenting with FEV at the Mariposa Base, and decided Smarty would be their next subject. They hadn't encountered many Vault Dwellers, and decided to see how the FEV would react to Smarty. It was here that he was turned into a Super Mutant by the Enclave. While most of these "experiments" would be killed or captured for later usage, Smarty found himself waking up a good distance away from the Mariposa Base. Did he somehow escape? Did the Enclave release him as yet another experiment? Did the Enclave abandon Mariposa and didn't have time to clean up the trash? Smarty never knew the answer, as he ran as far as he could, away from Mariposa.

This is the point where Smarty can remember his past. Everything before this point is unknown to Smarty.

When Smarty ran as far as he thought was necessary, he took some time to take in his new body. Smarty viewed himself as a monster, and decided that he didn't want to live as a Super Mutant.

In an unknown location, Smarty jumped a height that he assumed would take his life. The fall didn't kill him, obviously, but he was very injured. Smarty laid there, on the ground, with broken bones, bleeding limbs, waiting to die. When he was approached by two figures wearing purples cloaks. They were the Children of The Cathedral, with the remnants of The Unity.

They didn't know who Smarty was, all they saw was a Mutant dying on the hot ground. They took him to the Unity Remnants, and nursed Smarty back to health. When Smarty awoke, he found himself among other Mutants for the first time. The Children of The Cathedral who had saved his life talked to Smarty for a long time, convincing him that his new life as a Mutant was worth living.

Smarty repaid this kindness by joining up with The Master's Ranks, for a time. For about a year, he was a member of the Unity, enforcing the Master's will, and learning his gospel. It was at this point where his memories of his time as a Mutant started to fade away. The other, less intelligent Mutants simply called him "Smarty" because of the way he talked. Apparently, whatever his original name was, it was too hard for those dumb brutes to pronounce.

Eventually, Smarty one day awoke with the haunting realization that he did not remember his name. Smarty was all he knew now.

Smarty was always a gentle person. A man of Science, and learning. The life of a Soldier did not fit him very well, and Smarty knew this. He made the difficult decision to leave his brethren, in the Unity. Smarty told them that he would still be serving the Master, but in a way that was less violent. This convincing, along with Smarty's service, granted him the benefit of the doubt, and he was allowed to leave Unity's ranks.

Smarty doesn't like talking about his time as a soldier of The Unity. He did things that he regrets. But there is one question that Smarty walked away with.

"Do I believe in The Master?"

Smarty didn't find the answer to that question. Some members of Unity might call it "A Challenge in Faith". Smarty, for the past few decades, has been struggling with whether or not he should worship the Master, and to this day, does not have the answer.

It was at this point that Smarty started to investigate his past. Wanting to learn about where he came from, who he really was.

He had an outfit for him, custom tailored. A Trench coat, and a Fedora, incase he needed to brave any kind of difficult weather. Smarty had to admit, he also just liked how it looked on him. Eventually, people started to catch wind of the mysterious mutant, and rumors started to circulate about just what he was trying to figure out. People figured that he was a Detective, and one day a woman approached Smarty, and desperately asked him to find her lost daughter. She said that she was out of options, and that since Smarty was already investigating his past, he could investigate this as well.

This was Smarty's first case. This was the beginning of Smarty's Detective Services. Finding that little girl brought Smarty a sense of accomplishment and joy. He was finally helping people, his way. Eventually, more cases flowed in, and Smarty got so backed up that he no longer had time to investigate his past.

But one day, he will return to his most difficult case. He will find out his past, and he will finally re-learn his true name.

For now though, there's people who need help, bad guys who needs to be stopped, and a lot of cases to solve.

FUN FACTS:

Smarty's Favorite Color is blue. (Yes, Blue.)

Smarty was once an Adoptive Father to a girl who eventually joined The Followers.

Smarty once got Married to a human woman. (She died)

I have used a mod to play as Smarty in Fallout 4, where he joined The Railroad, only because the image of Smarty successfully sneaking aboard the Prydwen was way too fucking funny to me.

Smarty Enjoys Gardening, and grows trees often. (GUESS YOU COULD SAY HE'S GOT GREEN THUMBS)

His Favorite Radio song is "Dear Hearts and Gentle People" by Bing Crosby.
